Child Dedication

Here at Riverdale Church, we believe children are a gift from God and our desire is that every child would experience God’s love for them. We want to partner with parents on the journey of raising their kids with godly principles as their children continue to grow in their relationship with God. We achieve this through our Child Dedication Services which are held quarterly.

Biblical Foundation of Child Dedication

The Biblical Foundation of child dedication comes from 1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NASB), where woman named Hannah prayed year after year for God to give her a child. God answered her prayer gave her a son, whom she named Samuel. When Samuel was born, Hannah prayed these words:

"For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord."

Another example, found in the New Testament is in Luke, chapter 2. In this passage Mary and Joseph took the infant Jesus to the temple and dedicated him.

In both Scripture passages, the parents entrusted their child completely to God. The writings of Moses, found in Deuteronomy 6:5–9, describe God's plan for how a parent should raise up a child:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."

At Riverdale Church, child dedication will help you mark this step as you publically express your desire to raise your children with godly principles.

Do We Need To Be Members?

You do not need to be a member of Riverdale Church, but we do encourage families to make sure they are calling Riverdale their church home. In doing so, you are essentially partnering with both God and the church in raising your child. In partnering with Riverdale Church, it would be beneficial for your family to make sure you agree with our beliefs and vision. This ensures you can fully participate in partnership with Riverdale Church in the raising of your child.

Does Riverdale Church baptize Infants?

No, Riverdale Church does not baptize infants. We call baptism a believers baptism where we believe that it takes a personal commitment and putting faith in Christ to be baptized. We follow the biblical example found in Luke 2:22 in which Mary takes Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to “present Him to the Lord”. By imitating this biblical example, Riverdale Church encourages parents to dedicate their children to acknowledge that (a) their child is a gift from God and (b) vow to set a godly example in their home. Child Dedication Services at Riverdale are a great opportunity as parents to publicly declare that you want to raise your children to develop their own relationship with Jesus.

What age does my Child Need to Be to Participate?

At Riverdale Church, we believe that a child can participate at any age. While we do not have  a set age requirement for Child Dedication, the average age can range anywhere from four to eight months. Regardless, we welcome all families that may have older children.

What Can I Expect on Day of Dedication?

The Child Dedication ceremony will take place in the sanctuary, during both the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services. Families are free to choose which service they will attend. Following our morning worship, one of our pastors will call parents to the platform to recognize all the children being dedicated. Each family will be led in a prayer of dedication and personal covenant before heading back to their seats.
